What is Cluttering?

One of the main speech disorders we treat at our practice is also one of the most overlooked: cluttering. Below, we’ve provided some information and treatment recommendations for those who clutter.

The “other” fluency disorder

The term “fluency disorder” describes a disorder which impacts the typical flow and rate of speech. When we think of fluency disorders, we often think of stuttering. However, cluttering is also a fluency disorder as it affects how a person’s speech is perceived by listeners.

What is cluttering?

St. Louis and Schulte (2011) define cluttering as a perceived rapid and/or irregular speech rate, which results in breakdowns in speech clarity and/or fluency.
