Individual therapy or coaching can last anywhere from one session to one hundred sessions, depending on the individual and their needs. Some clients work with us for just a few sessions, then decide they have the tools to continue learning on their own. Others work with us for years, because of the value the structure and accountability of regular sessions.
On average, most clients work with us for 3-4 months on a weekly or bi-weekly frequency. It is common to begin services with weekly or bi-weekly appointments, and slowly reduce the frequency until you feel comfortable on your own.
Even after graduating, many of our past clients call us one or two times a year for a “check-in” or refresher session or schedule a few consecutive visits to address a specific situation. Communication is highly context-dependent, and it’s normal to encounter new challenges or need a boost to remember old skills. We welcome anyone who wants to drop in for a single session to get some specific pointers.
Our hope is that our clients see us as a resource: we are here when you need us ... however much or little that is!
Oh yes. Homework is the most important part!
We are in-network with BCBS PPO. We are considered an out-of-network provider for all other insurances. We do not participate in Medicaid or other public aid programs. We do have a limited number of reduced-rate scholarship available for cases of demonstrated financial need.

Our practice is tailored to meet the needs of adults and older children (teens and adolescents). Communication skills from adolescence-onwards operate on a much different level from early childhood, and "good communication" depends highly on the social context. For most children, this context-focused approach becomes appropriate around 5th grade or later.
However, for children who stutter, we provide service at every age from preschool onwards.
For children younger than 5th grade who do not stutter (eg children with language disorders, language delay, articulation and phonological disorders, autism, etc.), we typically refer out. We are fortunate to have many wonderful colleagues at practices throughout Chicagoland who specialize in working with younger children. We will be happy to help you find a practice that fits your child's needs!
Most PPO plans do not require a referral, but this varies by individual plan. We will assist you in determining whether or not you need a referral, and how to acquire one if so.
We accept cash, check, credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), and electronic transfers such as ChasePay. We also accept debit and credit cards associated with Health Savings (HSA), Flexible Spending (FSA) and Payflex Accounts. We are also happy to work with HR departments and employee education programs to bill services to an employer.
We understand the urgency of communication concerns, and our goal is to start services ASAP. We can typically set up new clients with an evaluation within 2-4 weeks of initial contact, schedules permitting.
We have office hours M-F during both daytime and evening hours, from 9 am - 7:30 pm. Availability varies by clinician schedule. We have limited Saturday availability from 9 am - 2 pm, again dependent on individual clinicians. We are not open on Sundays.
We do not require clients to sign up for standing weekly appointments. Many of our clients are working professionals with inconsistent schedules, and we are able to schedule on a week-to-week basis as needed. However, for clients with limited availability who attend during peak hours, we strongly recommend committing to a specific timeslot if possible.
Yes! Online services are not recommended for certain types of services (for example, articulation work on the /s/ sound), but video conferencing is very effective for a wide range of communication skills. Online services are available both to local and long-distance clients. Some local clients choose a mix of online and in-person services simply because it is more convenient than coming to our office.
For more information about online services, please contact us.
Information about location and parking is available here.
We provide in-home therapy only for preschool (pre-kindergarten) children diagnosed with stuttering. All other services are rendered only in-office or online (see above).
We occasionally offer observation opportunities for students with a demonstrated interest in our unique style of therapy. Students interested in observing should send an email detailing their interest in our practice and their observation goals to rachel@speechIRL.com. Please note that observation opportunities are usually very limited and subject to our clinical team’s discretion and interest.
We offer limited clinical placement opportunities throughout the year, both in part- and full-time capacity. Students interested in a placement should have their graduate placement coordinator contact rachel@speechIRL.com (if applying for the summer stuttering intensive course, the graduate coordinator does not need to contact us, but students should apply).
Interviews are required for all externship opportunities, and we often have multiple students vying for the same spot. We review externship applications very seriously to ensure that the student is likely to succeed in the placement and receive the necessary clinical hours.
