Research and Evidence

Bridging the gap from research to practice

One of the goals of the 3Es framework is creating a "shortcut" that funnels the most up-to-minute advances in stuttering research directly into clinical practice. Traditional approaches to stuttering therapy focus on fluency and physical aspects of speech production. However, current research findings extend far beyond fluency and behavioral skills. Speech therapy that primarily targets fluency and/or physical aspects of speech production is, arguably, not evidence-based in the 2020s!

The 3Es model is regularly updated to incorporate the most recent findings in stuttering research. The research segment of the model is organized in such a way that practicing clinicians can directly tie specific goals, activities, and therapy targets to published research. If you need to validate or justify your treatment plan with published evidence, use the resources below. Alternatively, if you are feeling stuck in therapy and want to know what else is out there: use the research for inspiration!
